Will Power
(No. 12 Team Penske Verizon 5G Chevrolet) finally got his first victory of the 2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season on Saturday afternoon, winning the Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. It was Power's fifth career win on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile layout. It was also the 40th career INDYCAR SERIES victory for Power, who broke a tie with four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser to climb into fifth on the all-time list. The win also was the sixth of Power’s career at IMS, as he also won the 2018 Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge. “We needed that as a group,” Power said. “I can’t tell you how good these guys have been all year. Flawless on pit stops. They’ve given me the car, and we’ve had some bad luck. I’ve made some mistakes, as well. “So stoked to get the Verizon 5G car in Victory Lane. Oh, what a relief, man!” Rookie Romain Grosjean equaled his season-best finish – on this same circuit in the GMR Grand Prix in May – by placing second in the No. 51 Nurtec ODT Honda, 1.1142 seconds behind Power. Colton Herta (No. 26 Andretti Autosport Gainbridge Honda) rebounded from his disappointing late-race crash the previous weekend in Nashville to finish third. 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi (No. 27 Andretti Autosport AutoNation/NAPA AUTO PARTS Honda) earned his season-best finish by placing fourth, and NTT P1 Award winner Pato O’Ward (No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet) finished fifth. O’Ward pulled to within 21 points of series leader Alex Palou with four races remaining in the season, as Palou retired from the race on Lap 68 with a mechanical problem while running fourth in his No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing NTT DATA Honda. Palou led six-time and reigning series champion Scott Dixon by 42 points entering this event. Dixon fell to third but still trimmed the margin to the top, 34 points behind Palou, after placing 17th – tying his season low – in the No. 9 Chip Ganassi Racing PNC Bank Grow Up Great Honda. Next up is the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 on Saturday night, Aug. 21, at World Wide Technology Raceway near St. Louis. It’s the final oval race of the season. (Thank you to INDYCAR Media)

Brad Binder (No. 33 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) won the chaotic Austrian MotoGP at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday, deciding to stay on slick tires in the pouring rain to hold on for the victory. Francesco Bagnaia (No. 63 Ducati Lenovo Team) was second, Jorge Martin (No. 89 Pramac Racing Ducati) was third, and Joan Mir (No. 36 Team Suzuki ECSTAR) finished fourth - all on wet tires! Bagnaia, who led for much of the 'dry' race, would have needed just one more lap to pass Binder, but the South African was rewarded for being the only member of the lead group to stay out on slicks and celebrated his second MotoGP win. (Thank you to crash.net) Watch the highlights here

The first NASCAR Cup Series road-course race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was a flat-out disaster.  With track issues tearing up a third of the field and a finish that took forever to complete, it was NOT a good look for NASCAR or the Indianapolis Motor Speedway by any stretch of the imagination. But, in the end,  A.J. Allmendinger (No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet) who led only when it counted - the last two laps of overtime -  scored his second career NASCAR Cup Series victory Sunday. Denny Hamlin (No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota) was leading the race on the final restart with two laps to go before being hit from behind by rookie Chase Briscoe (No. 26 Ford) in Turn 10, just before Briscoe was supposed to serve a penalty for running off-course earlier in the lap. Instead of winning, Hamlin finished 23rd and Briscoe, 26th. With those two cars derailed, Allmendinger moved up from third place to take the lead and hold off Ryan Blaney (No. 2 Team Penske Ford) and Kyle Larson )No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet) by .929-seconds for the win. It was only Allmendinger's fourth NASCAR Cup Series start of the year. “We just won at Indy, what’s up,” Allmendinger yelled toward the grandstands after screaming in excitement on his team radio during his entire victory doughnut celebration at the start/finish line. “I mean, it was survival of the fittest,” Allmendinger said. “We probably had like an eighth, 10th-place car, sped on pit road. I thought we were going to finish 12th to 15th and then those restarts were just insane. “It’s great when you have a car owner that just says, ‘go get me trophies’. He doesn’t care if that thing is torn up.”  Watch extended highlights here. (Thank you to Holly Cain/NASCAR Wire Service)
