Carpenter (No. 20 ECR Fuzzy's Vodka Chevrolet Turbo V6) put together an impressive four-lap, 10-mile run at 229.618 mph in the Fast Nine Shootout featuring the fastest drivers from first-day qualifications on Saturday. It was his third Indy 500 pole position, becoming the 10th driver in race history with three or more. "Every other pole I've won here, at least one of the laps, I was right-hand down loose on the last lap," Carpenter said, "but the balance was just perfect for all four laps (Sunday). ... It's still never easy doing what we do, but they certainly gave me a great car." His initial lap of 230.088 mph on the qualifying run was the first logged by anyone at that speed this year on the 2.5-mile oval without the assistance of an aerodynamic tow. "I don't know that I was expecting to see that, but the (No.) 20 car had a lot of speed in it and we still had a long ways to go at that point," Carpenter said. "I had seen other guys drop off a lot, especially guys picking up understeer in the middle of the run, so we were able to put down four pretty consistent laps for the time of day. It was a lot of fun." The 37-year-old Carpenter will lead the field of 33 cars to the green flag when "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" rolls off Sunday, May 27 (11 a.m. ET, ABC and Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network).

Will Power (No. 12 Team Penske Verizon Chevrolet Turbo V6) qualified third at 228.607 mph and Josef Newgarden (No. 1 Team Penske Verizon Chevrolet Turbo V6) was fourth at 228.405 mph as Team Penske went 2-3-4-8 in qualifying for the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500. The fourth Team Penske driver, three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves (No. 3 team Penske Pennzoil Chevrolet Turbo V6), had a disappointing qualifying run of 227.859 mph, which placed him eighth on the starting grid.

Ed Carpenter's teammates, Spencer Pigot (No. 21 ECR Preferred Freezer Service Chevrolet Turbo V6) at 228.107 mph and Danica Patrick (No. 13 ECR GoDaddy Chevrolet Turbo V6) at 228.090 mph qualified sixth and seventh, respectively. "I'm super proud of the team," Carpenter said. "It's one thing to build a fast car here. It's a whole 'nother to build three fast cars, especially one of them not being a full-time crew." Pigot's starting position will be the best of his 28-race career while Patrick will start in the first three rows at the Indy 500 for the fourth time, in the race that will end her groundbreaking career. "As far as a run goes, to be going as fast as you can possibly go, yeah, it was pretty comfortable," said Patrick. "I'm grateful for that." "How about Ed?" Patrick added, talking about her boss winning the pole. "That's awesome. He deserves it. He works really hard and they pushed hard in practice to get ready to sit on the pole."

Marc Marquez (No. 93 Repsol Honda) dominated the French MotoGP at Le Mans. It was a 38th win for the Spaniard in the series and extended his lead in the championship to 36 points. "The race was tough because the pace of everyone was close. This victory is important," said Marquez. Danilo Petrucci (No. 9 Alma Pramac Racing Ducati) was second and Valentino Rossi (No. 46 Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) finished third. Home town favorite Johann Zarco (No. 5 Tech3 Monster Yamaha) was on pole but crashed out of the race on lap seven. Maverick Vinales (No. 25 Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) was seventh and is second in the standings with 59 points.

Kevin Harvick (No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Jimmy John's Ford) won Saturday night’s Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. With five points wins already this season, Harvick took control of the event with an overtime surge at the end of the 20-lap third stage and sealing the victory by outrunning Daniel Suarez (No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Arris Toyota) in the final two-lap drag race to the finish. Joey Logano (No. 22 Team Penske Shell Pennzoil Ford) was third.

Audi dominated their home Formula E race in Berlin., with 25-year-old Daniel Abt (No. 66 Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler Audi e-tron FE04) qualifying on the pole and going on to a start-to-finish victory, while teammate Lucas di Grassi (No. 1 Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler) finished second. Jean-Eric Vergne (No. 25 Techeetah) was third.

After the Red Bull Global Rallycross Series blew up, it was only a matter of time before another series rose up from the ashes. The Americas Rallycross series is the new racing entity, and Volkswagen returns to competition this year in partnership with the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team. The season begins May 25-27 in Silverstone, England, at the brand-new Silverstone Rallycross circuit during the Speedmachine Festival. The Americas Rallycross opener will be held in conjunction with the British round of the 2018 World Rallycross Championship (WRX). The Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team will continue to campaign the the same 2.0-liter, 560HP turbocharged Beetle Supercars that have earned the team multiple championships over the past four years. Drivers Scott Speed (No. 41 Oberto Circle K Beetle) and Tanner Foust (No. 34 Rockstar Energy Drink Beetle) hope to add to their previous success in the new series.
