Takuma Sato and Graham Rahal set the fastest lap in each of the four, three-hour Verizon IndyCar Series test sessions spread over Friday and Saturday at ISM Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. Sato (No. 30 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda, above) recorded the best lap of the Phoenix open test in Saturday evening's final practice, at 189.855 mph (19.3790 seconds). The reigning Indianapolis 500 winner sat atop the speed chart in three of the four sessions, with Rahal leading the other practice in the team's No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing United Rentals Honda (below). "The open test was very successful, I would say," Sato said. "Lots of things done and lots of things to be tried, and I think over the course of two days we learned a lot. Great car, definitely more exercise for the drivers, definitely busier with low downforce. Will Power (No. 12 Team Penske Verizon Chevrolet) posted the second-fastest lap on the combined timing sheet for all practices with a lap of 189.769 mph (19.3878 seconds). Tony Kanaan (No. 14 A.J. Foyt Racing ABC Supply Chevrolet) was third-quick in the final practice and overall with a lap of 189.632 mph (19.4018 seconds). Though Kanaan's teammate, Matheus "Matt" Leist brushed the wall three times in the No. 4 A.J. Foyt Racing ABC Supply Chevy, the 19-year-old Brazilian was fastest of the five rookies participating in the test at 187.431 mph. Josef Newgarden (No. 1 Team Penske Hitachi Chevrolet), the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series champion, was fourth on the speed chart with a lap of 189.399 mph (19.4257 seconds). Next up for the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series is the season opener - the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg - March 9-11, the first of 17 races on this year's calendar. The race airs live at 12:30 p.m. ET March 11 on ABC and the Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network.

Alex Bowman (No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Nationwide Chevrolet) turned a lap of 195.644 mph to get the pole for the Daytona 500. Denny Hamlin (No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing FedEx Express Toyota) was second with a lap of 195.092 mph. The rest of the field order will be determined by the twin qualifying races on Thursday, which is more than a little odd this year since every car will have a spot in the race due to the fact that there are no excess entries for NASCAR's biggest race. The decline of NASCAR continues.

Brad Keselowski (No. 2 Team Penske Miller Lite Ford) won the Advanced Auto Parts Clash at Daytona on Sunday. Joey Logano (No. 22 Team Penske Shell Pennzoil Ford) was second, Kurt Busch (No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Monster Energy/Haas Automation Ford) finished third and Ryan Blaney (No. 12 Team Penske Menards/Peak Ford) was fourth.
