Josef Newgarden (No. 2 Team Penske HITACHI Chevrolet Turbo V6) won the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Sunday, the opener of the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season. Newgarden finished 2.8998 seconds over reigning series champion Scott Dixon (No. 9 Chip Ganassi Racing PNC BANK Honda Turbo V6). It was the 11th triumph of Newgarden's eight-year NTT IndyCar Series career but first on the 14-turn, 1.8-mile temporary street course that incorporates a runway of Albert Whitted Airport. The win by Newgarden extended Team Penske's run of success at St. Petersburg to nine victories in the event's 16-race history. It was also the 204th win all-time by the Indy car team, most in the sport.

The five-time series champion has 41 second-place results in a nineteen-year career, tying him for second on the all-time race runner-up list with Helio Castroneves. Mario Andretti is first with 56 second-place finishes. "All in all, a great day for the whole PNC Bank crew," Dixon said. "Pit stops were phenomenal, great points. Obviously, we were going for a win so we just came one stop short, but congrats to Josef. (He) drove a hell of a race there and great strategy."

Kyle Busch (No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing SKITTLES Toyota Camry) chased down leader Ryan Blaney (No. 12 Team Penske MONEYLION Ford Mustang) after restarting fourth on Lap 239 to win the TicketGuardian 500 at ISM Raceway, the fourth Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race of the season. Busch ran behind Blaney for 37 laps, finally making the winning pass on Lap 296 of 312. It was Busch’s third victory at the 1-mile track and his 52nd in NASCAR's premier level. Combined with Saturday’s win in the NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Phoenix, the Sunday triumph gave Busch the twelfth two-race weekend sweep of his career. Martin Truex Jr. (No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing BASS PRO SHOPS Toyota Camry) finished a charging second and Blaney finished third. Truex made up roughly seven seconds over the last 22 laps and finished 1.259 seconds behind Busch.
