Editor-in-Chief's Note: Alfa Romeo Stelvio Update. After 1450 miles in my new Stelvio, I can safely say that the dynamic ability of the machine is even more impressive than when I first picked it up. It feels exactly like a sport sedan, it is light on its feet, responsive, and the steering is truly exceptional. I have started to put my foot in it a little, too, and the responsiveness of the engine/gearbox is more than decent, but I'll have more to say on that when I start to hammer it with frequency. There are a few quirks with the Stelvio to be sure, but no problems. The shifter engagement demands that you be more deliberate at times, especially when maneuvering between gears while pulling into a parking spot. And I am pleased with the audio system, too, which sounds excellent. (Full disclosure, I am not that demanding with a sound system in a vehicle; if it does what I want it to do, I'm happy). Needless to say, I have traveled too few miles to report anything beyond my initial experiences with the Stelvio, but so far it has exceeded my expectations. -PMD

Editor-in-Chief’s Note: It’s official: The Detroit Auto Show is now a Tier 2 regional event. Audi just announced that it is pulling out of the show, joining BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Mitsubishi, Porsche and Volvo. What now? A new show date in June or October, ending the traditional January weather nightmare, and then a long, slow road back to respectability. -PMD

Mercedes-AMG is extending its sports car portfolio with the new AMG GT S Roadster. The new AMG GT S Roadster combines a lightweight aluminum space frame, a handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine with 515HP and maximum torque of 494 lb-ft., a seven-speed dual clutch transmission, a rear axle locking differential and a sport suspension with aluminum double wishbone axles. Compared to the AMG GT Roadster, the AMG GT S Roadster has numerous modifications to the engine, suspension, brakes, design and interior. This positions it between the AMG GT Roadster and the even more powerful AMG GT C Roadster, now providing a choice of three open-top two-seaters. The AMG GT S Roadster goes 0 to 60 mph is an estimated 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 192 mph. The Mercedes-AMG GT S Roadster will be available in U.S. dealers by late 2018. Pricing hasn't been announced.
